When I dine out, I try to order things from the menu that I cannot make for myself at home. Not being very skilled in the kitchen, this opens up a wide range of options for me. Considering that I was the girl who, up until around age 20, would rarely stray from ordering chicken fingers and French fries at a restaurant, I am quite proud of the recent expansion of my palette and the type and variety of foods I have now tried (and liked). I certainly needed this culinary curiosity on my recent trip to Bluegrass. Bluegrass brings down-home cooking with a contemporary edge to the Federal Hill restaurant scene through their innovative, Southern-inspired menu – it’s a unique departure from the norm in Federal Hill and like nothing else I’ve seen (in my admittedly recent and limited experience).

Last week Pier Six Pavilion kicked off their summer concert season with a “Rock the Docks” party featuring Ben Harper and the Relentless 7. While I did not purchase a ticket for the event I took the opportunity to walk over to Pier “Seven” to check out the show. Great minds think alike as a swarm of people lined the docks across from the Pavilion. While I have been to concerts at Pier Six, and intend to go to a few this summer – I was happy to just sit along the docks and listen for free! This summer’s lineup is especially impressive. Here are just a few of the concerts coming this summer:

Growing up, when my parents said we were going out to eat, I knew exactly what to expect: where we were going, where we were going to sit, who was going to serve us, and what we were all going to order. My parents are creatures of habit who had been dining out at this same establishment since before I was even in the picture, and they felt no need to stray from the tried and true. As an adult, it is not surprising to me that I have my own sort of affinity to the familiar. My restaurant is Regi’s American Bistro on Light Street in Federal Hill. Whenever I have an occasion to celebrate: out-of-town guests, a hankering for a meal out, and yes, even when my parents visit, I find myself relying on the friendly and welcoming neighborhood atmosphere that seems to suit every dining situation.

Opening day for Orioles baseball has come and gone.  The city of Baltimore was electric.  Walking next to the stadium on my way to work there were crowds already gathered outside Pickles Pub.  We lucked out with sunny skies, even though the temperature was a bit chilly.  Unfortunately our poor Orioles could not pull out […]

The temperature is rising, the flowers are blooming, and spring is upon us.  To me that means one thing: the start to another fun-filled Orioles season.  With the most snow on record this winter I am overjoyed to bid farewell to snow shovels and winter sweaters and hello to sunshine and baseball.  Baltimore definitely knows […]

Having just moved to the DC/MD/VA area last fall, I’m a newbie to all of this Cherry Blossom Festival hoop-la. Everyone has been telling me how beautiful the springtime is here, and after this crazy winter we’ve just experienced, I was hoping they weren’t lying.  I’m a runner, so I was also told that I […]
