The Olympic Games begin this Friday and we are proud to announce the Mid-Atlantic is sending quite a few Olympians from Maryland, Virginia and D.C. We have put together a quick overview of some athletes from our region so you can keep an eye out for them and root for your friendly neighborhood Olympian representing team USA!
Matthew Centrowitz, Jr., 22
Track & Field, 1500m
Matt Centrowitz Jr. is the son of two-time Olympian Matt Centrowitz. He ran track and set records at Broadneck High School. Following in his father’s footsteps, Matt ran track for the University of Oregon, winning numerous titles including the 2011 American National Champion at 1500m.
Farrah Hall, 30
Sailing – Windsurfing
Farrah attended Broadneck High School and St. Marys College of Maryland. She is an accomplished triathlete and marathoner, and of course, windsurfer! This will be her first time competing in the Olympics!
David Banks, 28
David attended Winston Churchill High School in Montgomery County, MD. His undergrad and graduate studies were at Stanford where he began his rowing career, and he currently trains at Princeton University.
Will Coleman, 29
Will has been riding since he was 6 years old and will compete in 3 day eventing aboard Twizzel, a 15 year old Warmblood gelding.
Claire Laubach, 28
Claire attended Centreville High School and Wake Forrest University where she played on three National Championship teams. She has been on the National team since 2005 but this will be her first Olympics!
Giuseppe Lanzone, 29
Giuseppe took up rowing at McLean High School and continued at the University of Washington. He was born in Peru and currently trains in California. This will be his second Olympic Games.
Gabby Douglas, 16
Virginia Beach, VA
Gabby Douglas was on the 2011 World Team that claimed team gold in Tokyo. She is known for her routines on the uneven bars. Gabby currently trains in Des Moines, Iowa where 2008 Olympian Shawn Johnson trained.
Kate Ziegler, 24
Great Falls, VA
Swimming, 800 Free
Kate attended Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School in Arlington, VA and began her college career at George Mason University before transferring to Chapman University. Kate traveled to the Beijing games in 2008 but did not swim in the finals. She is looking forward to London!
Michael Phelps, 27
Swimming – 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Fly, 800 Free Relay
Michael attended Towson High School and Phelps made history in Beijing, winning 8 gold medals in 8 events. London will be his fourth and final time competing in the Olympic games, where he hopes to break the record for most decorated athlete ever in Olympic history.
Katie Ledecky, 15
This is Katie’s first Olympics games as she is the youngest member of US Olympic swim team! Katie is a rising sophomore at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, MD.
Carmelo Anthony, 28
Carmelo Anthony attended Towson Catholic High School in Baltimore, Maryland. He is a professional NBA player for the New York Knicks and played on team USA in Athens 2004 earning a bronze medal and in Bejing 2008 earning team gold!
Terrence Jennings, 25
Terrence attended T.C. Williams High School in Virginia. This will be his first Olympic games. Terrence’s interest in Taekwondo came from watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
