Visit Lincoln Cottage
Posted on August 26, 2016

Everyone knows about the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Capitol and all of the other thought-provoking and commemorative sights that DC has to offer.

But if you’re looking for an out-of-the-way, little-known piece of history right here in our midst, visit Lincoln Cottage.

During the summer months of his presidency, Mr. Lincoln and his family escaped the hustle-bustle of downtown DC and the very public scrutiny of the White House, choosing to relax and greet visitors in the cooler, less intrusive environment at Lincoln Cottage in the northwest corner of the district.

Each summer day, President Lincoln traveled via horseback from the cottage to the White House, stopping along the way to greet soldiers, neighbors, and merchants. On some occasions he even eluded his military escorts!

Enjoy a guided tour of the Lincoln family’s home and the Robert H. Smith Education Center. Experience another side of one of our most beloved presidents, and learn a bit about the environment in our nation’s capital during the Civil War era.
