Washington, DC Events

White House Fall Garden Toursat Ellipse Visitor Pavilion

15th and E streets NW

Time: 9am-4pm, Friday and Saturday

Price: Free, timed tickets distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at beginning at 8am the morning of the tour.

Tour the White House Gardens, including the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, the Rose Garden, the White House Kitchen Garden and the South Lawn of the White House.

 

Ari Shaffir at The Improv

Standup comedian and actor Ari Shaffir describes his comedy as a puppet show, filthier and without the puppets. He was a featured standup on the HBO comedy series Down and Dirty with Jim Norton and performed at this year’s Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and Toronto, the San Francisco SktechFest, and the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland.

Velocity DC Dance Festival at Shakespeare Theatre Company – Harman Hall

The main movie house has quietly become one of the best comedy stages in town thanks to  some savvy bookings. (Comedic heavy hitters such as Lizz Winstead and Patton Oswalt, and more recently, Kristin Schaal, who played the stalker in HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords” have performed there.) But for a real deal, hit Saturday’s free open mike in the intimate Grill,  featuring as many as 20 local comics who hit the stage in quick succession. Once in a blue moon,   a headliner from the main room makes his or her way over for a quick appearance after a show.

For oenophiles looking for something grander than the usual tasting, Barrel Oak hosts this cool, formal, seated tasting with food pairings at the adjacent Oak Hill Estate, a historic home that, in the 18th and 19th centuries, belonged to Supreme Court chief justice John Marshall (it’s the first time the home has been opened to the public).

BARCStoberfest

BARCStober Fest benefits over 12,000 homeless animals that come to BARCS each year. BARCStober Fest includes: pet contests (including costume), pet health and welfare specialists, pet blessings, pet micro-chipping, stage entertainment, food vendors, local artists, silent auction, raffle, other area animal rescues and so much more!

This year BARCStober Fest, in partnership with Charm City Run, will be featuring its first Ready…Set…Sniff 5 K Run OR Walk with your 4 legged friends around Baltimore’s Patterson Park. The Run/Walk ends right at the start of the festival so you and your fur kids and human family can enjoy a day of fun together!

National Wildlife Federation’s Hike and Seek at Seneca Creek State Park

11950 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg, MD

What could be better than taking your family on a hike through a picturesque park as the leaves begin to turn? Going on a two-mile hike hosted by the National Wildlife Federation that includes five hands-on stations to help children learn about nature. Children can try their hand at replicating bird songs, creating solar prints and making bug boxes. There will also be a display by the Department of Natural Resources’ Scales and Tales. Best for age 10 and younger.

Antique and Classic Car Show at Rockville Civic Center Park

This Saturday the Glenview Mansion will serve as a backdrop for more than 500 antique cars of  all makes and models from Model ‘A’ Fords to Volkswagens. Every year the show features a    special exhibit, and this year is no exception with vintage coach built cars on display.

Howl-o-wine pet costume contest and wine tasting at Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard

African American Art Since 1950: Perspectives from the David C. Driskell Center at University of Maryland – College Park

In collaboration with the Smithsonian, this exhibit shows how art by African Americans has evolved over the last several decades, displaying works by famous artists such as Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden and Sam Gilliam and new talents such as Kara Walker, Lorna Simpson and Chakaia Booker.
